Then he picked up a camera and gave twenty years to other people's stories. Those films won fifty-six international awards. He stopped promoting the paintings entirely.
They are still in the studio. This is the first time the work has had a home of its own.

Shortly after moving to Las Cruces in 2004 I began having once-a-year art shows in my home, and they were very successful. Later, when I got deeply involved into making independent documentary films, I no longer promoted my paintings.

A Man Who Kept Going, and Kept Quiet About It
Ed Breeding has painted for more than fifty years. Somewhere past a thousand canvases, he stopped counting. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Europe, spent a brief period in Washington, D.C., and ran production floors as a superintendent at La-Z-Boy in Michigan and Tennessee — a job he credits, without irony, for teaching him how to read people.
He has traveled most of the world he paints from: all of the United States, Canada, Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Cuba, Australia and most of Europe. What he brought home was less a set of subjects than a habit of attention.

In 2004 he moved to Las Cruces and began holding one art show a year, in his living room. They sold out, every time. Then documentary film took him, and for twenty years he told other people's stories instead — Indigenous elders, addiction, and the cost of being told who you are allowed to love. Fifty-six international awards later, the paintings were still stacked against the studio wall.
He paints four months of every year and publishes three to five books in the other eight. There are thirty of those now. This site is the first attempt anyone has made to put the whole of it in one place.

The Work

Sizes and years are still being confirmed with Ed, one work at a time. Prices shown are the originals as listed at Fine Art America; originals are arranged directly with the studio, not through a checkout.

Every painting here is on stretched canvas — oil or acrylic, painted by hand — and there is exactly one. It comes from the studio in Las Cruces, not from a warehouse, and Ed answers the inquiry himself.
Sizes and prices are being confirmed with Ed one painting at a time. Ask about any piece and he will come back with both.
New originals are added as they come out of the studio.

He Is Not Finished.
Novels, Indigenous spirituality, two-spirit histories, a photographic journey through New Mexico, an illustrated autobiography, and the arguments he could not leave alone. He publishes three to five a year. The most recent ones came out in 2026.

One book in 2007, then nothing for twelve years. That gap is the documentary work. He came back to writing in 2019 and has not stopped.

First Look and Giveaways
The Signed Print Giveaway, in Plain English
Every three months Ed signs one print and gives it to somebody on the First Look and Giveaways list. There is nothing to buy and nothing to do beyond joining. These are the rules, written so they can actually be read.
Draft. Ed confirms every item marked to confirm, and should have an attorney read this once, before the first draw opens.
No Purchase Necessary
Joining First Look and Giveaways is free. Buying a painting, a print or a book does not improve your odds, and buying nothing does not hurt them.
Who Can Enter
Anyone eighteen or older, in the countries Ed can ship a print to (to confirm). Void where prohibited by law. Ed, his family, and anyone who works on this site are not eligible.
How to Enter
Join the First Look list with a working email address and phone number. That is the entry. One entry per person — and you stay entered for as long as you are on the list, so joining once enters you every quarter after that.
When the Draws Happen
The first draw is 1 December 2026, and every three months after that — 1 March, 1 June, 1 September. Everyone on the list at the moment the draw opens is in it.
How the Winner Is Picked
At random, from the whole list. No judging, no voting, no popularity. Ed does not choose.
The Prize
One print of a work Ed selects, signed by him, shipped at no cost to the winner (print size, and the piece for each quarter, to confirm). One prize per draw. It cannot be exchanged for cash and cannot be transferred to somebody else.
If You Win
We write to you by email first, and telephone if the email does not reach you, within seven days of the draw. If we have heard nothing after fourteen days we draw again. Reaching a winner is the only reason a phone number is asked for.
What Happens to Your Details
Your email is used for First Look and to tell you if you have won. Your phone number is used only to reach a winner — no marketing calls, no texts. Neither is sold, rented or passed to anyone. One click unsubscribes, though leaving the list also leaves the draw.
